Bernstein.... interesting comment. I've thought about that - and I've been using a PC since 2001, so it's not like I don't know what I'm missing.
I am stealing this list from a friend. Hint: It's not about Dell computers:
1. Take it out of the box. Turn it on. It will now work for you.
2. You can now run Windows on a Mac, so you get the best of both worlds.
3. Hardly any viruses.
4. It's just prettier.
5. The OS is simple, simple, simple AND intuitive. It's like a Wii vs. a PS2 as far as that goes.
6. Pretty pictures, videos, and designs. Mac has more easy-to-use creative software and it comes WITH the computer. Photos + Mac = Love
7. They run just as fast as a PC (that used to be a problem but isn't anymore).
8. Video chat via iChat. Because Grandmas and Grandpas dig that shit.
To which I will add (9) NO VISTA.
For the record, I looked at Newegg, Dell, and Pricewatch and I could not find anything comparable (processor, RAM, HD, Video, built-in camera, DVD-RW) for less than $1500. So not quite double - and I'd argue the software is easily worth the difference.
Steve Jobs owns me.
P.S. I will say that PC desktops are far more efficient in terms of price and ability to upgrade.
Mine, for example, will be running Linux by Christmas. Maybe I'll use it as a server...
To Bernstein - sure, you COULD buy a Dell equivalent for less, but it wouldn't be that much less. So you save $500 short-term, but your Dell laptop will only last you 18 months, constantly give you the blue screen of death, and repairs (and you'll need a lot to keep it running) will cost you up the @$$. I have a friend that went the "cheap" route and spend $1700 for the top-of-the-line Dell laptop. Let's just say it takes his computer 7 minutes to load up and crashes CONSTANTLY. Mine takes about 45 seconds and has NEVER EVER crashed.
For a laptop, Mac is the obvious choice. If you like to mess around with your desktop computer, then go buy a PC.
I don't know why I feel like I must defend my Dell Laptop, but I'm going to. At my law school we are all required to have laptops and there is always an option between a Dell and a Mac. I chose the Dell and really haven't regretted it. I've had mine for 2 and 1/2 years and have never had a single problem (and I practically live on my computer all day, every day.) Just last week two of my friends who chose Macs had major crashes. Luckily they had backed up there notes for finals, but they lost everything else.
Also, Dells have more viruses because there are many more PCs out there than there are Macs. Once the Mac explosion really takes off there will almost certainly be more viruses created to target them.

YES!!!
Did you finally get one? What gives? What kind?!
Congrats! I assume we can expect EVEN MORE posts now that you have a shiny new laptop. Enjoy it!
Congratulations -- you've purchased performance that a Dell could have given you for half the price.

Congrats on your new purchase though. :)
